Summaries
Chapter 1:
Main characters introduced: Piggy, Ralph, Jack,
Other characters introduced: Sam, Eric, Johny, Maurice, Roger, Bill, RObert, Harold, Simon, Henry, Ralph’s dad, Piggy’s Aunt.
Character development:
Ralph: Ralph is a tall, thin and fair boy. Ralph is 12 years old. Ralph is a bossy boy who is very overconfident about himself. He doesn’t have basic manners and is rude to his “friend” Piggy. One instance of him being rude is when he told everyone about Piggy’s name even though Piggy told him not to tell him. Ralph does show instances of being sensible but that fades away fast. He is bossy, for example, he told Piggy to get his clothes and he wasn't courteous about it. Ralph is not very smart seeing as he called a conch shell a rock but he did figure out that the place they were in was an island so, he is smarter than a lot of people present on that island. Ralph also seems to think that his father will come and save them all. Even though ralph is mean, he did once protect Piggy by saying, “He’s not fatty!.”
Piggy: Piggy is a fat character but he has good heart. He has no parents and so he lives with his aunt. He is smart seeing as he knew what a conch shell is. Piggy openly gets neglected a lot. He is not physically fit and has bad eyesight but he has a great heart. He trusts people very easily because he openly admitted his life story to Ralph even without knowing him. Piggy gets bossed by Ralph and he doesn’t do anything about it. Piggy has basic manners.
Jack: Jack is the leader of the choir and he is arrogant at first. He seems to think that he is the ruler of the world because he is the leader of the choir. He is also rude but soon he becomes with Ralph and they get along. He makes himself look braver than he actually is as he was too scared to kill the pig but could not admit it.
Plot development: In the first chapter, There has been a plane crash and one part of the plane has landed on an Island. The population that has survived the crash all seem to be kids and they are very confused but at the same time very cool about the fact that they’re on an inhabited island and have no adults with them. Ralph (the main character) and Piggy found some other kids and they are trying to make a pact to survive this tragedy. Ralph along with Simon and Jack is the one who finds out that they are on an uninhabited island and that there are pigs on this island. They had found a pig but Jack (had a knife) was too scared to kill the pig but was too afraid to admit it. They did however still need food and warmth (shelter).
The island is described as a very beautiful island with clear and beautiful waters and the kids don’t seem very scared. They seem to be rather enjoying themselves.
Conflict:
The conflict in this chapter is definitely Man vs Environment as the kids are stuck on an island they have no clue about and they have to figure the island out.
Chapter 2:
Character development:
Ralph: Ralph starts to become meaner and meaner by every chapter. He is yet again mean to Piggy. He snatched Piggy’s glasses and set fire using them. He also did not follow his own rules by not letting Piggy speak when he had the conch. He also continually told Piggy to “Shut up”. Ralph keep becoming more and more overconfident by the chapter. He ignored a child because he thinks only his opinion matters. Ralph also did not apply any logic and set fire to the forest. Clearly, Ralph is not becoming any smarter.
Jack: Jack is not mentioned a lot in this chapter but, Jack is pretending to be very brave as he stabs a knife into a tree and says that he will kill any animal that comes in their paths as food. Jack is also becoming more and more overconfident by the chapter. He thinks that him and Ralph can do anything together.
Piggy: By the second chapter,Piggy is starting to overcome his shyness and speaking up. He yelled at Ralph to explain to him some common sense and also he wants to make himself known. Piggy has done a lot of work for which Ralph has not given him any credit for but yet again Piggy continues to be bullied by Ralph. He has become a bit more confident. Piggy is very gentle with the kids. The hero within Piggy is starting to show up.
Plot Development: In the second chapter Ralph becomes very confident of himself and starts ordering the kids around. By this time Jack also acts as if he would kill the next thing that they find (to eat). Jack and Ralph make some rules for the kids. Along with the Rules, Ralph tells the kids to have fun because there are no grown ups. One of them involves raising hands like the kids do in school to talk and when they do they get the conch. Also, Ralph and Jack have an idea about starting a fire on the top of the mountain. Once again Ralph is mean to Piggy and ignored whatever Piggy has to say. Ralph makes the fire by using Piggy’s glasses and sunlight. By lighting the fire on top of the mountain, Ralph sets fire to the Forest. The fire was not the only problem, a small child goes missing. The child had mentioned snakes being on the island but Ralph had ignored the comment by telling everyone that the child must be dreaming. Not only does the child go missing, snakes enter the scene at the end of the chapter.
The island in this chapter is not described as beautifully as it is in the other chapters. The descriptions seem to be getting darker and darker and the island as the kids start to know about it gets scarier.
Conflict:
The conflict again is between man vs environment.

Chapter 3:
Character Development:
Ralph: Ralph is very fussy and expects a lot. He expected the little kids to help him make a shelter. Also, he becomes annoyed due to hunger and constant work. Even though Ralph is very impatient and inconsiderate, he is responsible. No matter what we say about Ralph’s character, he is taking his responsibility as leader seriously. He took the responsibility of being leader and he is trying to make sure everyone is safe. No matter, how impatient Ralph gets about meat, he does care about Jacks well-being and he didn’t get too annoyed about having no meat.
Jack: Jack has become very responsible, specially if compared to the first chapter. He makes sure he’s looking for meat and he’s not rude to Ralph. He generally respects Ralph and doesn’t care about him being the choir leader that much anymore. He is still however a kid and is scared to kill living meat. In this chapter, he has a conversation with Ralph abou killing and he said that he feels guilty as he is killing an actual living thing. Jack along with Ralph is also very responsible as he is responsible enough to look for meat for everyone.
Piggy: Piggy is being different, he is not helping Ralph. In my opinion, Piggy is tired of all Ralph, someone he trusted, has put him through. He just lay and enjoyed the sun.
Simon: We didn’t know much about Simon but now we know that he is very responsible and he is an explorer as he wanders off. He helps Ralph makes the shelter and he’s a very calm kid. He doesn’t complain about food or water, he’s just going with whatever comes in his way.
Plot Development: In this chapter, the author displays a lot of hard work done by Ralph, Jack and Simon. Jack has been hunting for meat all day and he’s very tired and worn out while Ralph has been making shelter with Simon’s help. Ralph doesn’t give Simon much credit for his help. Ralph is also very impatient and in this chapter he is not very considerate. He doesn’t consider the fact that even Jack is too tired to find meat after he’d been looking all day. Ralph decides to start yelling at Jack for not getting any meat and fuss about how the little kids don’t offer any help. Of Course, Jack himself is a kid. This chapter tells us that they have been keeping a constant fire so that someone sees the smoke and hopefully comes to their rescue but for now, Ralph fears the lack of proper shelter incase snakes show up or a storm and he also fears lack of meat. The kids continue to grow hungrier day by day. Simon also wanders off because maybe he was offended by the lack of importance and credit Ralph gave him.
The island is described beautifully yet darkly in this chapter. The forests are inconvenient and painful and little kids seem to be getting hurt. Jack had thorns in his feet.
Conflict:
this time the conflict is between man vs man and man vs environment. Jack struggles with the island and cannot find any prey and man vs man as Ralph and Jack break into an argument.

Chapter 4:
New characters introduced: Percival, Henry, Roger, Maurice, Johny (To an extent)
Character Development:
Character Development:
Ralph: Ralph does not have a lot of role in this chapter yet he is still rude to Piggy when he suggest making sundials. He also spotted a fire and was very determined to get out of the island and so he tried everything in his power to get that ship to notice them but unfortunately his determination did not work out. Ralph is still responsible yet still arrogant. There are a lot of mixed emotions about this character.
Piggy: Piggy again saw a smile on Ralph's face and misunderstood it as friendship. He still trusts people very easily but is still more logical than anybody else on the island. Unfortunately though, he is still bullied. Ralph is still rude to him and so is Jack. Jack calls him "Fatty." Piggy is treated with no respect.
Jack: Jack's true colours are showing. He was arrogant before and he's starting to be again. Jack also is extremely rude to piggy. Jack is not very responsible as he let the fire on top of the mountain die out which is one of the reasons Ralph got very angry at him and because of which the ship (possibly) didn't see them.
Roger: Roger is a new character introduced in this chapter and he is not an angel. He's rude with kids. He broke their sandcastles and threw socks at them which is not very nice. His friend Maurice helps him cause problems to the little ones.
Plot Development:
In this chapter, everyone is just beginning to get used to waking up every morning and seeing a beautiful island. The kids still haven't understood the gravity of the situation they're in. they don't seem to miss their families. The kids eat and sleep and play all day long. On the other hand, Jack and his choir are still responsible for the fire on the mountain and Ralph and Simon make the shelters. In this chapter, Ralph spots a ship and he wants to signal it but then he finds out that fire at the top of the mountain (the signal) had died because Jack was not looking after it. Jack on the other hand was busy killing a pig. He was more worried about killing a pig than being rescued. He wanted to prove himself.
Ralph and Jack got into a heated argument so, the conflict is man vs man and Piggy has a one sided heated conversation with Jack. The conflict is also Man vs Nature as the kids are still stuck on the island. Also, the conflict is man vs nature as the kids are still scared of the "beastie" and still are positive about a monster roaming the island.

Chapter 5:
Character Development:
Ralph: In this chapter, Ralph decides to show his positive traits. He becomes responsible and calls upon a meeting to organise matters. He is not rude to Piggy in this chapter but is still not open minded. Ralph continues to deny that a beast (Beastie) lives on this island. Ralph is also a but stressed out because he alone with simon has been doing the majoy work and the others don't seem to want to be rescued.
Jack: Jack has still not come to his senses. He is still overconfident as he says that if there is a beastie on the island they inhabit, he will hunt it down and kill it. His over-confidence comes from the last chapter when he killed a pig. He still doesn't understand the gravity of the situation they are in.
Piggy: Piggy in this chapter was more outspoken. He took the conch and really did speak up and he spoke sense. He was very supporting of Ralph in this chapter and they did not even argue and that shows some improvement in Piggy's character.
Plot Development:
In this chapter Ralph calls up a meeting and every gathers for the meeting. He establishes some rules which no one followed before but he's hoping that they will now. Piggy is supportive of Ralph and Jack still doesn't really care. He's fine with the situation and he seems to think he's not getting any credit for what he's doing. Jack and his choir are all happy in this chapter and they dance and sing but no body really gets the situation. The little kids complain about the beast that was mentioned before. They seem to think that it's a ghost or it comes out of the water. This possibility had not been explored before. By the end of the Chapter Ralph, Piggy and Simon (wanderer) are the only ones with sense in them while the others enjoy themselves.
The conflict again is man vs man and man vs environment.

Chapter 6
Character Development:
Sam and Eric: These twins were introduced before in the book but they had no main purpose. In this chapter however, it is their responsibility to watch the signal flame. They are careless and they fall asleep while the major action in this happens.
Ralph: Ralph is courageous and daring which is why he goes to explore the cave but he is still stressed out about the fact that the kids don't seem to take anything seriously.
Jack: Daring.
Plot Development:
During the night while Sam and Eric were supposed to look after the signal fire. They fell asleep and a lot happened during that time. Fighter plans had gone over them. They are in middle of war. There were explosions and firings and one of the people fighting fell down and he was dead. His body got stuck on a tree and it made scary shadows. When Sam and Eric woke up and went to check on the fire, they noticed the body and immediately told Ralph. This causes Ralph to call on a meeting and the meeting concludes with the resolution that the beastie has killed that man so, Ralph and Jack and his choir boys leave to hunt the beast while Piggy stays behind with the kids.
The conflict in this chapter was man vs environment. The island continues to trouble these kids. We also recently found out that these kids are abandoned in the middle of war. This is relevant new information. The plot has progressed a lot since before. The kids are no more ir-responsible and messing about (not the little kids), They're taking responsibilities and according to me, all of them have become wiser and smarted.

Later that day, Ralph, Jack and a few others go for a hunt and they find pig droppings and they find the boar and chase it down. Jack gets hurt and claims that the boar did it but the boar escaped. The kids didn't get over the excitement after the chase and so they re-enacted the whole scenario. Robert becomes the boar and nearly gets killed as the kids don't realise that they were just acting.
Later that night, Jack challenges Ralph to hunt at night. They go hunting and they come running back claiming to have scene the monster.

Chapter 10
Character Development:
Jack: Jack's getting way over his head by now. He doesn't show any care for the fact that Simon died because of his recklessness. He blames Simon and thinks that the beast still exists. He's starting become ruder and he treats his hunters bad as well along with everyone else. To be honest, all this hunting stuff is been taken way to seriously by Jack and he's starting to go crazy. He punished people for now reason and he raided Ralph's camp when he would have gladly shared and also he claims to have his own tribe.
Piggy: Piggy being the logical person he is figures that he was involved in Simon's death and feels really bad about it. He stronger than he was before. He can hide pain now.
Ralph: Ralph is becoming mature. Realisation starts hitting him and he feels terrible about what happened to Simon. Simon was a very loyal friend to Ralph.
Plot Development:
Piggy keeps denying that he was involved in Simon's death while Ralph is losing his mind over this. Everyone is very sad and not so hopeful in being rescued. They don't care about the signal fire as much. The boys go to sleep very sadly but suddenly they are awoken by loud noises. Those noises are Roger and Maurice leading a group of hunters to raid Ralph's camp. They steal wood for fire and along with that they steal Piggy's glasses. Now they have the power to make the fire.
The conflict now has nothing to do with the environment. The environment may have started this but now the conflict is Man vs Man. They will be the death of each other.

Chapter 11
Character Development:
Jack: Jack has definitely lost his mind. He treats life like it's nothing. He's hurting people and forcing the to join his tribe. It's because of him Piggy dies. It's a shame how downhill his character has gone.
Ralph: Becoming logical. Wants to settle matters with just words but now he's lost both his loyal friends, Piggy and Simon.
Piggy: Stuck with Ralph until the very end. A very loyal friend.
Plot Development:
Jack and his crew cannot do anything without a fire and no matter how much they tried, they could not get the fire to start without Piggy's glasses so they decide to go to Jack and talk some sense into him. Ralph carries the conch to remind the others of it's authority. When they reach Jack's tribe, they are attacked and while Jack and Ralph are fighting Roger throws a boulder in hope that Piggy and Ralph both get him but Ralph doges and Piggy gets him. Piggy dies along with the conch which gets shattered. There is no more authority left.
The conflict in this chapter is only man vs man.
